Change in Common
Climate change and the future of the yard
This collection of design research from the graduate landscape architecture program at the University of British Columbia asked: what is the form and appearance of responsible actions that community members can take within their yards to address contemporary environmental issues?

The yard provides a setting through which to explore the role of individual residents in contributing to the collective challenges facing our society. For example, while the first residents of Vancouver did not concern themselves with climate change, residents today face the combined challenges of species extinction and a warming city. Although we can lament the commitment of so much dubiously claimed land to private and individual ownership, students worked within this spatial reality to envision new futures for the yard.
