Change in Common
Climate change and the future of the yard
Blurb (2020): 314 pages
The yard provides an opportunity to explore the responsibility of individual residents to the collective challenges facing our society. For example, while the first residents of Vancouver did not concern themselves with climate change, today we face the extinction of species and a warming climate. We ask ourselves, what is the form and appearance of responsible actions that community members can take within their yards to address these issues? Although we can lament the commitment of so much dubiously claimed land to private and individual ownership, within this spatial reality and power structure we can still ask, what new uses of the yard are possible? The projects presented here use landscape design as a method of research to explore the future of the yard.
